On May 17, Senior Researcher at the Radiation Monitoring Laboratory, Ilya Alexandrovich Rubinstein, celebrates his 90th birthday – a distinguished scientist, brilliant engineer, and wise mentor.
Head of rad-lab SINP, Vladislav Osedlo:
"Your life in science is not just years of work but a constant source of inspiration for everyone around you. You have a unique ability to see what truly matters, find unexpected solutions, and—most importantly—inspire others with your passion.
Thank you for continuing to show us that real science is about dedication, perseverance, and the willingness to seek answers to the most challenging questions. We wish you new discoveries! Happy anniversary! May your ideas keep changing the world for the better!"

I.A. Rubinstein has been working at SINP MSU since 1960 and has made invaluable contributions to space research over the decades. He is a leading expert in developing instruments for studying cosmic radiation and has successfully led the laboratory’s engineering team for many years.
Under his guidance and direct participation, unique scientific instruments were created and installed on spacecraft such as Elektron, Molniya, Kosmos, Gorizont, Express, Gals, Universitetsky-Tatyana, and others.
Ilya Alexandrovich developed SINP’s first proton spectrometers (1.5–60 MeV) based on CsJ scintillators and LEDs, which were used on Molniya-3K and GLONASS satellites. He also pioneered an innovative method for calibrating Cherenkov electron spectrometers (1.5–13 MeV) without particle accelerators.
In recent years, he has led the development of new spectrometer designs for the Meteor and Elektro satellite series.
Additionally, I.A. Rubinstein designed a series of instruments for MSU’s Department of Biophysics to measure alpha-decay fluctuations and continues to upgrade equipment for nuclear physics student labs. Under his supervision, future physicists complete internships and successfully defend their theses.
Ilya Alexandrovich holds nine patents, is a recipient of the "For Merits in Space Exploration" medal, and was named SINP MSU’s best employee in 1999 and 2005.
