🛰️ Schollers Became Space Scientists and Engineers for a Week at Rad-lab SINP MSU

The summer internship has concluded at the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University (SINP MSU) for 10th-grade physics and mathematics students from School No. 1574. 📚✨

Over the course of a week, the students tried themselves as real researchers and engineers working with satellites at different stages of their life cycles. The culmination of the project week was a final presentation, where the students showcased their achievements to their peers and staff of SINP MSU and the Space Research Institute 🎓🔧

In just a few days, participants explored four key specializations:

🛰️ Earth Remote Sensing (ERS) Satellite Operator

The students studied the structure and functions of a satellite using an engineering model and mastered operator software. They took control of several real spacecraft — Monitor-4, KuzGTU-1, and Vizard-meteo. Considering weather conditions, they planned Earth imaging using an onboard camera, conducted the imaging, and downloaded the resulting images 📸🌍. Additionally, they uploaded their own image onto the Monitor-3 satellite and broadcast it — the photo was received by amateur radio operators worldwide, including from Russia, Greece, Canada, and other countries 📡🌏.

🌞 Space Weather Researcher

The students studied how cosmic rays affect Earth's magnetosphere. They obtained scientific data from the DEKOR instruments onboard the Avion and ArcticSat-1 satellites, as well as the EPAM instrument onboard the large ACE satellite for space weather analysis. Participants learned to identify Earth's radiation belts, the South Atlantic Anomaly, and solar flares in satellite data ⚡🛰️.

🔧 Design Engineer

Future engineers studied the intricacies of creating onboard satellite systems, developed camera modules and spacecraft orientation determination systems. These modules were manufactured using 3D printing and then integrated into a CubeSat 3U mockup. The students tested the modules' operation and carried out necessary refinements 🖨️📐.

💻 Onboard Control Systems Programmer

Participants studied various sensors for spacecraft positioning in space and wrote software with an algorithm for determining location using gyroscopes and accelerometers. They configured sensors and data acquisition systems for both autonomous mode and manual control via a user-friendly interface 📊🎛️.

🚀 Excursion Program

In addition to project work, the students visited several unique facilities:

  • Museum of Space Developments at SINP MSU
  • Ballistic Center of the Space Research Institute
