⚡️ Radiation Monitoring lab SINP MSU Launches Summer Space Internship for Schoollers on Children's Day

June 1 — on Children's Day, staff of the Radiation Monitoring lab (Rad-lab) at the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University (SINP MSU), together with colleagues from the Space Research Institute MSU, launched a summer internship for 10th-grade physics and mathematics students from School No. 1574. 🎉👨‍🚀

Over the course of a week, students will immerse themselves in real-world work with spacecraft: studying satellite development and operations, as well as receiving and processing scientific data. The Rad-lab of SINP MSU, which has unique expertise in near-Earth space radiation monitoring and satellite data processing, is the organizer of two out of four educational tracks 📡🛰️

The young participants have divided into four groups, each mastering a different specialization:

🔬 From SINP MSU (curators — rad-lab staff):

Earth Remote Sensing Satellite Operator

Rad-lab specialists will introduce students to modern Earth remote sensing tasks — why it is needed and what methods are used. In practice, participants will learn to plan imaging of specific objects, upload orientation and photography programs to an orbiting satellite, and then download the captured images. 🗺️📸

Space Weather Researcher

This track is a key competency of Rad-lab. Students will learn what scientific data is obtained using the laboratory's instruments, how it is used, and how it is processed. The practical part includes downloading data from scientific equipment in orbit, processing it, and analyzing it to search for significant events — such as solar flares. Participants will get to feel like real researchers of the space radiation environment 🌞⚡🛰️

🚀 From Space Research Institute MSU:

Design Engineer

A workshop on CAD systems: the full cycle from creating a 3D model of an onboard instrument to 3D printing parts and "fitting" them onto a satellite. Students will draw, convert, print, assemble — just like in a real engineering process. 🔧🖨️

Onboard Control Systems Programmer

A workshop on controllers, sensors, and onboard software. Students will assemble control systems, program them, and conduct experiments — moving from theory to real-world operation. 💻🎛️
